What is a CSA program you ask? CSA stands for community supported agriculture. It is a direct relationship between the farmer and the consumer. You purchase a "share" in the farm for the duration of the season. You share the risks and the rewards of growing food. It is a commitment to supporting the farmer and a commitment to yourself (and family) to eat lots of fresh locally grow nutritious vegetables. A CSA program is very convenient! You don't have to worry about going to buy vegetables or what you are going to eat during the week. The farmer chooses what veggies comes in the share and its automatically delivered to your pick up location every week. Check out the Vegetables page on our website for a list of what we grow. Mostly staple veggies like lettuce, beans, peas, potatoes, onions, carrots, tomatoes, etc. Maybe an herb like basil or cilantro will pop up. There will also be storage tips and recipes shared in the weekly newsletter before you pick up your bag of vegetables. Farmers love CSA because it is a guaranteed market for their vegetables, so its very easy to plan how much to plant and grow and harvest, without worrying if if it will sell or not. It allows us to pay our bills on time and our employees each week. We pay our employees higher than minimum wage to help them see farming as a career and want to stay - rather than just a summer job for students.
We use the Wolfville farmers markets online store WFM2Go for the logistics and delivery of our CSA program - wfm2go.ca. You can find the drop off locations on their website and also sign up under the "CSA & Subscriptions" page after making an account. Payment can be made with your credit card and it will be charged weekly when you pick up your CSA bag. It is automatic so you don't have to worry about putting your card info in every week. If you want to take a vacation week your share can be put on pause and you get a double share next week, or you can donate it to a friend. We can't just cancel the share because our CSA program is a set price spread out over a certain amount of weeks and it wouldn't be fair to us if you cancelled. If you will be away a lot this summer then a CSA share probably isn't for you. CSA is a serious commitment to the farm and once signed up only the farmer can choose to cancel it.
